We manufacture and sell sweets focusing on confectionery of the Lake Country and tea ceremony sweets (Jo-namagashi 「high-grade Japanese fresh confectionaries」, Higashi 「dried confectionaries」). Starting as a branch of the Kyoto confectionery maker, “Kamesuehiro,” we have been in business for over 70 years. Ishiyamadera Genjimado, Fuyaki Senbei Omi Hakkei, Kanehira Mochi, Nihono Kiku, Awazu no Sato, Rokumangoku Monaka, etc., are our representative specialties. At “Wa-Cafe,” we serve seasonal fresh sweets and Lake Country confectionery sets with your choice of organic drink. In addition to pesticide-free matcha, you can choose organic coffee or tea. The relaxing second-floor Japanese-style room and Ekigaku (divination) consultations by the proprietress require advance reservation.

Mii-dera Chikaramochi was founded in the second year of the Meiji era and is the birthplace of Mii-dera Chikaramochi, a product that has become famous in Otsu. The shop is named in honor of Musashibo Benkei, the immensely strong man who dragged Mii-dera Temple’s bell to Mt. Hiei. The traditional handmade technique used to make Mii-dera Chikaramochi has been passed down from generation to generation and has become known for its simple, rustic hometown taste. Chikaramochi is a fresh, made-to-order mochi which uses honey and a green soy bean powder topping. The mochi does not contain any additives or preservatives.

○Hashirii Mochi Hashirii mochi was created in 1764. Made using Hashirii mineral spring water and rice from Omi Province (modern-day Shiga Prefecture), this mochi would not only fill the bellies of travelers, but also soothe their weariness. The unique shape of this Hashirii mochi is an expression of the full drops of water that well up from the gushing spring. Visitors can take a look at our production line, or purchase some of our “Yuuko” Izutsu Yatsuhashi (a traditional sweet made of sweet red beans wrapped in soft mochi sheets). The shop also includes exhibitions of Otsu-e paintings, Otsu abacuses, bamboo blinds, needles, and more objects associated with the old Tokaido Road and inns along the forked road.
