Highlights & Introduction

Susanoo no Mikoto is the enshrined deity of Tenno Shrine.

According to the shrine’s legend, it was founded in 966 (the 3rd year of the Koho era) after the ceremonial transferring of the deity “Gozu Tenno” from Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto, and was renamed Tenno Shrine in the Meiji period.

The main shrine was constructed in the Kamakura period (1185-1333), and is currently a designated important cultural property of Japan.

Within the shrine grounds are relics such as a stone-made two-storied Buddhist tower and a pagoda which are thought to have been constructed in the Muromachi period (1336-1573).
