Kanou Shoujuan believes that Japan’s traditional wagashi sweets exist alongside the natural beauty of Japan, and strives to create sweets filled with an equal beauty.Also, because we are located in the southeast of Otsu City, in a 207,900 m² area of hillside known as “Sunai no Sato” (The Home of Longevity), and are surrounded by the beauty of the changing seasons, it’s the perfect location for visitors to enjoy a seasonal kaiseki meal or matcha tea together with a wagashi sweet.

Located on the north side of Seta Karahashi Higashizume, our store has changed over time from being centered around traditional cruising with a old-fashioned Japanese house boat, to both a restaurant as well as a ryokan that is beloved both locally and by visitors from the Kyoto and Osaka areas. Since relocating in 1952 to our current location in Seta’s Karahashi Nakanoshima, we’ve progressed from not just cruising, but to adding a tatami banquet area as well where you can dine while enjoying the fresh waterside atmosphere of Lake Biwa. Currently we have ceased operation as a ryokan, and are focused on our continuing house boat and banquet hosting endeavors.

Traditional dried candies are known across Japan as “rakugan,” but these originate from “Katata Rakugan” here in Otsu. Kinji-do sells such dried candies with an image of the floating pavilion on Lake Biwa, above which flies an elegant flock of geese. This is an image that originates from this area’s own “Katata Rakugan” (“The Wild Geese Returning Home at Katata”), one of the Eight Traditional Scenes of the Omi area. This store is located in front of the Niomon Gate that is part of Miidera Temple, which is the 14th stop on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. Our Benkei Buddhist cuisine, “Hiki Zuri Gane Manju”, and “Evening Bell at Miidera Special” are well renowned.

Our restaurant is located within the grounds of Mount Hiei’s Enryakuji Temple, the headquarters of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism. Here you can both experience the views of Lake Biwa, as well as enjoy our cuisine which puts an emphasis on the usage of locally sourced ingredients. We also carry a wide variety of popular souvenirs such as Mount Hiei homa tofu, and recently reopened after renovation in the spring of 2019.
