【History and Culture】
Ishiyamadera Temple, located in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, is the head temple of the Toji Shingon sect. It is said to have been founded during the Nara period by the priest Roben at the imperial request of Emperor Shomu. The temple is also known as the 13th temple of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage.

During the Heian period, pilgrimages to Ishiyamadera, known as “Ishiyama-mode,” became popular among Kyoto aristocrats who visited the temple for Kannon worship. Murasaki Shikibu is said to have stayed at Ishiyamadera and conceived The Tale of Genji while gazing at the moon reflected on Lake Biwa. The temple is also associated with other prominent literary figures, including Sei Shonagon and Izumi Shikibu.

Home to numerous cultural properties, including the National Treasure Main Hall and Tahoto Pagoda, Ishiyamadera is one of Otsu’s most representative cultural sites, where history, literature, faith, and natural scenery come together.
