Route

Day 1

9:00 AM – 11:00 AM

① Visiting Mt. Hiei Enryaku-ji Temple Wrapped in Autumn Colors

The autumn foliage on Mt. Hiei, at an elevation of approximately 850 meters, arrives early, with the trees beginning to turn color from the summit in late October each year, painting the entire mountain in autumn hues like waves of brocade.
In the Yokawa area, the inner sanctuary of Yokawa Chūdō, normally closed to the public, is specially opened, allowing visitors to view the principal image, the Standing Statue of Shō Kannon Bosatsu (Important Cultural Property), up close. Timed with the peak foliage season, the "Hiei Maple Festival" is held at a special venue in the Yokawa parking area.
In the Tōdō area, visitors can observe the once-in-60-years major renovation of Konpon Chūdō from the study stage, offering a rare close-up view of behind-the-scenes work and vividly colored decorations not normally visible. This study stage viewing is scheduled to continue until the end of November 2026, making it a precious sight that will never be seen again after the renovation is complete.

Due to the major renovation work, the interior of Konpon Chūdō will be closed for approximately two years from January 6, 2026, to January 2028. However, during this period, the principal image's substitute statue, the "Yakushi Nyorai Sacred Image," along with the "Eternal Dharma Light," will be specially enshrined at Manbaido in the Tōdō area. Don't miss this precious opportunity to view them up close!

⑤ Tea time and souvenir shopping at Miidera Chikara-mochi Honke

Long ago, the warrior monk Benkei of Mt. Hiei dragged the sacred bell of Miidera, famous for its beautiful sound, all the way up Mt. Hiei as a trophy. Years later, he returned the great bell to Miidera. Hundreds of years passed, and during the Keian era, a merchant began selling mochi named after the legendary strength of Benkei and Miidera. This was the beginning of Miidera Chikara-mochi. Its refined and mellow flavor has made it widely loved. Made without any additives, these nutritious rice cakes are coated in an original green kinako (roasted soybean flour) blended with green soybeans and matcha. Please enjoy them to soothe your travel fatigue.
