Seta River (Nango) Weir
Highlights & Introduction
The Seta River is the only river that flows out of Lake Biwa.
The Seta River weir was constructed in 1905 in response to a disastrous 1986 flood in an effort to control the water levels of Lake Biwa, as well as for managing flood control of the lower Uji and Yodo areas of the river.
The current Seta River weir is its second iteration, having been reconstructed in 1961. It has 10 electric gates and a total length of 173 meters.
In honor of the first iteration of the dam, former brick pillars still remain on both banks of the river’s upper stream in commemoration.
