Hieizan-Okuhiei Driveway

Highlights & Introduction

On Mount Hiei, the Okuhiei Driveway runs on the north side and the Hieizan Driveway on the south side, with the Tōdō area—home to the main hall of Enryaku-ji temple—serving as the dividing point. The total length is about 20 km, weaving its way through the entirety of Mount Hiei. Various types of cherry blossoms are planted along the Okuhiei Driveway, most of them yaezakura. The avenue of more than 1,000 yaezakura trees is truly a magnificent sight. The blossoms reach their peak around Golden Week each year, and in autumn the roadside is dyed in brilliant reds with the fall foliage. With nature to enjoy year-round and sweeping views over Lake Biwa and Kyoto City, we invite you to come and experience this superb driving route.
