【History and Culture】
Karasaki Shrine is an ancient shrine on the shores of Lake Biwa, deeply connected to Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine. It is also associated with the founding legend of Hiyoshi Taisha’s West Main Sanctuary. The shrine enshrines Nyobetto-no-Mikoto and is said to have been founded in 697, during the reign of Empress Jito.

During the Heian period, Karasaki Shrine was designated as one of the “Seven Shrines for Purification,” where impurities and misfortune were ritually cleansed before imperial court ceremonies. Many Saio, or imperial princesses serving at Ise Shrine, as well as court nobles, are said to have visited the shrine for purification rites.

As a shrine dedicated to a female deity, Karasaki Shrine has also drawn deep faith from women. Even today, worshippers visit to pray for recovery from women’s illnesses and other blessings.

Within the grounds stands the sacred Karasaki Pine, renowned as the centerpiece of “Night Rain at Karasaki,” one of the Eight Views of Omi. The pine was also immortalized in a haiku by Matsuo Basho: “The Karasaki Pine, more hazy than the blossoms.” Since ancient times, it has been cherished by poets, travelers, and all who admire the scenery of Lake Biwa.

With the wide waters of Lake Biwa and the graceful form of the pine overlapping before the eyes, Karasaki Shrine offers a quiet place to trace the history of the Eight Views of Omi, literature, and faith.
