  Sword dancing is a traditional performance art that employs Japanese swords and fans. The word for sword dance(kembu) literally means "sword dance" in Japanese. Samurai are said to have inspired and focused themselves by dancing with swords and fans during the feudal era. Typically, Samurai Kembu artists perform with songs and music, which utilize Chinese poetry and Japanese waka poems.

  The Otsu Festival started to be celebrated in the Edo Period as a religious festival of Tenson Shrine.
