Sufuku-ji Temple Ruins

It is said that Emperor Tenji had this temple constructed at the northwestern part of the imperial palace following the transfer of the capital to Otsu in 668. An archeological survey in 1928 detected traces of the building from three Mt. Shigasato mountain ridges, and a large cornerstone that is reminiscent of the temple’s arrangements of the time remains onsite. A container containing Buddha’s relics was also excavated from the tower’s foundation and is a national treasure.
