Highlights & Introduction

Shinodzu Shrine resides along the path of the former Tokaido road in Zeze. While the exact date the shrine was constructed is unknown, the discovery of a construction sign inscribed with the year 1456 suggests that the shrine originates from the mid-Muromachi period (1336–1573).
Entering the Edo period (1603–1868), the shrine became deeply revered by the Honda clan of the Zeze Domain. The current main building was constructed in 1661, during Honda Toshitsugu’s tenure as the domain leader. The front gate is the original small outer castle gate (Koraimon) of the former Zeze Castle and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. The massive zelkova tree on the grounds, said to be 400 years old, is also a highlight.
