Highlights & Introduction

Wakamiya Hachiman Shrine is estimated to have been constructed in the 4th year of the Hakuho period (645-710) in Zeze along the path of the former Tokaido road.
It is said that Emperor Tenji once made an imperial visit to this area, during which purple “shiun” clouds trailed the sky, and he saw a golden pigeon land on a nearby large tree. After witnessing this event, he declared a shrine be built on this land, thus being the origin of Wakamiya Hachiman Shrine.
Just like many other shrines located in Zeze during the Edo period, Wakamiya Hachiman Shrine was under the protection of the Zeze Domain. Its current front gate is the Inu Bashiri Gate which was relocated to the shrine from Zeze Castle
