Highlights & Introduction

Jozui-ji Temple is a Buddhist temple of the Rinzai sect that was founded by Kaso Sodon in the Muromachi period (1336-1573).

The temple is well known for being the training ground of Ikkyu Sojun, the famously quick-witted priest who was once a pupil of Sodon, during his youth.

The famous Edo period poet Matsuo Basho also once made a visit to Jozui-ji Temple in 1690 (the third year of the Genroku era), and a kuhi (a slab with a haiku poem cut on it) remains within the temple grounds to this day.
