Highlights & Introduction

Ono Takamura Shrine’s main shrine resides with the grounds of Ono Shrine.

The enshrined deity is the Heian period (794-1185) poet (of tanka poems) and government official, Ono Takamura (802-852).

The main shrine is said to have been constructed around the year 1341, and it is currently recognized as an important cultural property of Japan.

The gabled roofed, hirairi* architecturally structured main shrine building is a rarity nationwide, with Ono no Toufu Shrine and Tenno Shrine being the only other locations with architecture built in this style in Shiga prefecture.

*Hirairi: Japanese traditional architectural structure, where the building has its main entrance on the side which runs parallel to the roof’s ridge
