Highlights & Introduction

Honpuki-ji Temple was constructed during the Showa period (1926-1989) as part of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism.

Honpuku-ji Temple is well known for being used as a base of operation by the priest Rennyo (famous for his efforts in the restoration and spreading of Shin Buddhism) during the Muromachi period (1336-1573) when he visited Katata as part of his missionary work.

As well, the 11th chief priest Miyoshiki was the leading disciple of Matsuo Basho (whose poetry writing pseudonym was “Senna”), who wrote many poems about various stays at the temple.
