【History and Culture】
Ukimido is formally known as Kaimonzan Mangetsu-ji Temple, a temple of the Daitoku-ji school of the Rinzai Zen sect. According to legend, its origins date back to the Heian period, when Eshin Sozu Genshin built the hall over the waters of Lake Biwa while praying for safe passage across the lake and the salvation of all living beings. Inside the hall are enshrined one thousand statues of Amitabha Buddha, said to have been carved by Genshin himself.
The graceful sight of the temple hall appearing to float on the lake has long been celebrated as “Wild Geese Alighting at Katata,” one of the Eight Views of Omi. A haiku monument by Matsuo Basho also stands within the temple grounds, reflecting Ukimido’s enduring appeal to poets and literary figures.
The current hall was rebuilt in 1937 after the original structure was destroyed by the Muroto Typhoon in 1934. Although reinforced concrete pillars were incorporated into the reconstruction, the hall preserves its traditional character and remains beautifully harmonized with the waters of Lake Biwa.
【Lake Views】
Beyond the bridge extending into the lake, a sweeping panorama of Lake Biwa opens up before you. From Ukimido, visitors can enjoy views of Mount Ibuki, Oki Island, Mount Chomeiji, and other landmarks, along with the lake’s ever-changing scenery across the seasons and throughout the day.
Another highlight is the view of the temple hall itself, standing serenely over the water and enhanced by shimmering reflections, shifting light, and the colors of the sky.
