Koutoku-ji Temple

Koutoku-ji Temple is known for its relation with the Buddhist priest Rennyo, and the story of “Katata Genbei’s Head.”

It is said that long ago, Rennyo visited Miidera Temple to negotiate for a portrait of the founder of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist sect, Shinran, and was demanded to offer a freshly severed human head in exchange.

Genbei is said to have voluntarily offerred his own head in exchange for Rennyo, and it is thus enshrined at Koutoku-ji Temple along with a statue of Genbei with his father, Genuemon.
