Otsu Port once prospered as a transportation hub and center for trade on Lake Biwa. During the 17th century, over 1,000 marukobune (wooden transport ships) sailed on the lake, and the area was bustling as goods were brought in from all over Japan. Today, Otsu Port still prospers as a gateway to Lake Biwa's tourism.
