Iwama-dera Temple (Iwamaseiho-dera Temple)
The beginnings of this temple are said to trace back to the Nara Period (710-794), when the Buddhist priest Taicho carved what is now the temple’s primary object of worship: a statue of the thousand-armed bodhisattva Kannon.
The temple belongs to the Shingon sect of Buddhism.
The statue of Kannon here is very well known, and also known by the names of “Asekaki” (Sweating) Kannon, or “Bokefuji” (Preventer of Dementia) Kannon.
Iwama-dera Temple is the twelfth amulet-issuing temple of the 33 Temples of West Japan containing a figure of Kannon.
