Shiga Seirin Monument
Built in 1918, this monument was built in honor of Shiga Seirin, who is said to be the ancestor of sumo wrestling refereeing.
With his life taking place during the Nara period (710-794), Shiga Seirin was a strong sumo wrestler from a young age, with his name eventually becoming well known in not just Omi, but the entire Kinki region.
During the reign of Emperor Shomu (724-729), Shiga Seirin established the rituals of sumo in detail and created the basis for the “48 basic techniques of sumo wrestling.”
